The Academy for Professional Funeral Service Practice has approved the "Mastering the Media" video-based training courses and "live" seminar as follows:

  • Mastering TV Appearances: The 5 Star Survival Guide for Funeral Service Professionals, videotape, audio-cassette
    (Category A, 1.0 CEUs)
  • Headlines: Your Funeral Organization in Print, videotape
    (Category A, .6 CEUs)
  • On The Air: Effective Radio Talk Show Interviews, videotape, audio-cassette
    (Category A, .6 CEUs)
  • Crisis Communication and Crisis Management Plan, software download available from the Center for Funeral Media Studies
    (Category A, .6 CEUs)
  • "Mastering the Media" Seminar
    (Category A, .6 CEUs)

Additionally, the "Mastering the Media" Video Series and "live" Seminar are currently under review and are expected to be approved by all states that require funeral directors to participate in continuing education. Please call 800 -550-8978 if you have specific questions about whether or not your State is included and how you can qualify for continuing education units.

The following criteria was used to determine the value of the "Mastering the Media" video-based training series and "live" Seminar for continuing education accreditation:

  • That funeral directors perceive high value in the training; that it be not only interesting and educational but that, by completing the training, it would have significant impact on the business of the funeral home.
  • That funeral directors could apply the communication skills and tools taught in the training beyond media response. (i.e. advertising, public speaking, interpersonal communication, public relations).
  • That funeral directors could continue to use the training materials as on-going resources for any future scheduled media interviews, public speaking engagements, and crisis management.
  • That a funeral home could use the materials to continually train new staff members and provide refresher courses.
